At Mary Baldwin University, education is more than preparation for a career. It’s preparation for life.

Founded on a Belief in Women’s Ability to Make a Difference

Rufus W. Bailey, a minister, educator and abolitionist, founded what was then called the Augusta Female Seminary in Staunton, VA, in 1842. He did so out of a belief that women had the capacity to learn, lead and make a difference in the world – a revolutionary belief in those times.

Mary Julia Baldwin, the orphan daughter of a local doctor, was among the seminary’s first class of 57 students. She graduated first in her class of 1846. Mary Baldwin served as a teacher for young women and Black children. She returned to run the school for 34 years, including keeping it going throughout the U.S. Civil War. The Virginia General Assembly renamed the school in her honor in 1895. MBU now accepts men for its programs, both online and as residents on campus.
